There is a particular way to sit. A way to hold the paddling tools. Practise and patience to learn this vanishing skill; varied across potter communities in India.

At Sandur village, the potters throw an average of 15 matkas, a day, on the wheel. At leather hard, paddle them, by the end of the day. This may be the last generation who will make handmade matkas.

I’ve had the chance to work with the Sandur Collective’s potters, Honnurswamy and
Raju Anna, Vasantha and Annapoorna Amma.
Anna remarked, “You do know how to throw, but paddling is hard! “

We made some playful works together. Priceless exchanges! All made possible by the amazing team @hampiartlabs Meera @mcuram @harshada_hk @shivu.mahesh @v_dilip.rathod and Puja, at the Sandur Collective.

There have been many other material experiments during this residency; inspired by the Land; that’ll evolve in my art practise over time.

In the summer of 2024, I spent three months in the Celadon hub of Longquan in China, at Wang Ou Taoxichuan Ceramic Residency @longquanwangou_artcenter

This is a film made by their team. All their hard work, collective learnings and many a friends, during this impressionable period.

Thanks to everyone and my master ceramist residents @wanliyawly and @dududu_u_j_ceramics and @michael.ningxl for sharing their wealth of Chinese writing.

about this work:
Rashi sees ash in the Indian tradition as the ashes from burning of bodies, symbolising the impermanence and evolutionary cycles. Ash or Bhasma is sacred. Bha stands for 'destroy' and Sma, 'remember', signifying Unity with the Supreme Self. In tantra, the skull is a symbol of Life and death. In deep states of silence, the Kundalini, the serpentine energy channel in the body, rises, from the base of the spine to the crown, illuminating the brain. A moment of witnessing the Self: the skull is a symbolic offering, a surrender: dissolving of the body and mind into ash, merging with the cosmos.

It was truly humbling to be selected to exhibit with incredibly experienced artists in this show and having met them at the congress in September 2022.

It took almost two years developing the form and material experiments ..and perhaps, lifetimes to experience. Six months of coiling multiple pieces and carving. Time did collapse..merging night into day. It was one of the hottest summers and keeping the paper-clay body moist was a constant. Carving in this scale is a labour of love and patience.

She came alive at various stages and continues to etch a pathway of revelations, that connect dots of my journey in exploring the ‘Body as a Vessel’ and Snakes…transforming the inner negativity to strength.

Here.. the snakes intertwine..symbolically..rising up through the nerves of the body, illuminating the energy channels in the spine.

It was truly humbling to be selected to exhibit with incredibly experienced artists in this show and having met them at the congress in September 2022.

No matter how many kilns opened .. this first peek always takes it’s own time to seep in! The pandemic made me see so many more layers in the meditative figures I’ve been making since the past decade. new work emerging.

Just seeing them placed like that is inviting. I have been building a sculptural piece since 3 months and the prep, clay making, tests, ideation, making-breaking-falling, till the right pace, form and size emerged over a year. There is a new direction.. evolving over the pandemic, with much guidance from masters, clay mentors and friends.

The new wood carving tools are being discovered as I carve at various stages. The others have been bought over years.. and most recently @nceca Minneapolis.

Love picking up assorted objects from local craftsmen from travels .. and wait to find a use in the studio. They feel so sturdy and gorgeous!

This coiled sculpture was built at site, at the founding edition of @newcitylimits .. an artist’s collective we formed in Navi Mumbai. This was in a space (supposedly a flight simulator) full of book racks, which we partially cleared besides the other rooms, where artists created mixed media installations, at VaikunthBhai Hall, CBD Belapur.

Many a memories from exploring the Fishing (Koli) village and a utopia of sorts, of friendships, exchanges and working together.

Reactions from visitors to this life size expression; with the sensory experience of the wet earthenware and Haldi, Kum Kum; energised it even further. We wood fired this work later, in a Fred Olsen Kiln, at Yusuf Mehrauli Center.

The many heads are the roles we negotiate, the snake juxtaposed with the human body .. all striving a constant balance.

This exercise has helped immensely to get myself to just play! along the sculptures in the making and a sense of relief on days I can’t get myself to do much during this past mad month of covid.

The forms are a ‘space’ in the making; to bring focus and where I’d like to be.. They are spontaneous and an exploration of surfaces and the mind’s threshold.

Can say now that I’m quite thrilled with the outcome most days :)
